Veil Veil Vanish, "Change in the Neon Light" (4/5)
Breaking onto the San Francisco music scene is hard to begin with, but trying to add a unique sound is even harder, and it's something Veil Veil Vanish has not only tried, but achieved with their album Change in the Neon Light.
With all the danceable sensibilities of groups of the late '80s, VVV also adds their own innovative sound, noticeable in nearly every track. One tune begging to be put on a constant repeat due to its catchy chorus (and also my personal favorite) shares its name with the album title, and ushers the listener into the album easily and oh-so-lovingly. As the album progresses, tracks like "Modern Lust" and "This Is Violet" illustrate the slightly haunting and intriguing feel similar to that of film noir in the mysterious and thought provoking fluidity that most albums in this genre lack. While the ensemble of tracks are a tight and cohesive package, the listener doesn't seem rushed through a groups attempt just to make a great album, but rather a groups effort to create a great experience, and to evoke a sense of storytelling at times, and a sense of relation.
I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to say that Veil Veil Vanish's future is bright, and have many remnants of The Cure for our more modern times, creating a fantastic blend of dance-worthy tracks as well as mind-stirring ones, Change in the Neon Light is a perfect addition to the vibrant and successful San Francisco music scene.
