The Pilot’s Wife, “Mercury” EP (4/5)
Hailing from San Jose, California, The Pilot’s Wife is one of the more talked about local bands of the Bay Area, with a newer progressive sound which is very well displayed in their EP, titled Mercury. With only a few songs to hook listeners, which contain a consistent flow of well thought out lyrics, impressive riffs, and mature vocals, I found it easy to be taken through all five songs on the album.
In songs like “A Measure Of Focus,” it’s obvious that the band doesn’t feel that they have to rush through the album. The Pilot’s Wife takes time to weave in a simple yet very pleasing piano piece which goes to show that in every album, a song to wind down and chill out makes listening a much more rewarding experience. Alongside taking the time to showcase simplicity, the song “Room Of A Dying King” shows the band’s experimental side, using an assortment of instruments to blend together what feels like part of a jam session. The group definitely has their style down and knows how to draw in people who are looking for an easy listen.
Whether you’re listening to the album from beginning to end, or just hearing one song, this EP has a very calming collection of songs. However, it should be noted that much of the time I would find myself being lost in the amazing music and not giving as much attention to the vocals. Even with that, much can be said for the vocalist, who has a matured voice that you don’t hear much in the Bay Area music scene.
This album is definitely worth a listen and will be sure to leave you thinking futuristically about how much more impressive a potential full length could be.
