Spitalfield, “Better Than Knowing Where You Are” (4/5)
Spitalfield’s third full-length release, “Better Than Knowing Where You Are”, takes the best parts of “Remember Right Now” and “Stop Doing Bad Things” and finds the perfect mix between them.
The album starts out with the 24 second intro track, “Dare to...”, with singer Mark Rose quietly singing, “It's just another stretch of highway / I never asked for ordinary time and time change / If I rewrote this it might just sound the same...”, which then sets up with a clean transition into the full on rocker “The Only Thing That Matters.” In the final verse of this song, Rose sings, “Into your eyes I've fallen even farther / I don't think I can hold back any longer / The only thing that matters now is this could be perfect.” These lyrical hooks are all over the record, much like the songs from their debut album, “Remember Right Now”. By doing this, “The Only Thing That Matters” perfectly captures the energy that was absent on Spitalfield’s last record.
The first single off of the record, “Secrets In Mirrors”, is also another standout on the album. The slow parts of the song are complimented perfectly by the catchy chorus. In it, Rose sings, “I’ve been waiting, everything is taking way too long, we’ve gone about this all wrong.” Also present on the CD is a huge influence from early emo heroes, Texas Is The Reason.
Overall, this album is exponentially better than “Stop Doing Bad Things”. Spitalfield has clearly shown that they are moving back towards the style of music that has made them great in the past.
