Sondre Lerche, “Phantom Punch” (5/5)

Norweigan singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche is sure giving people something to talk about. His new album, “Phantom Punch”, delivers a refreshing indie pop sound that almost every audience is sure to enjoy.

This quirky album features song after song of energetic hits, starting with the eccentric “Airport Taxi Reception” and finishing up with the dreary “Happy Birthday Girl”. The only real break in this pattern of gusto is halfway through the CD, when the album calms down momentarily for the acoustic track, “Tragic Mirror”.

Sondre Lerche’s theatric voice meshes well with the bubbly melodies that his band, The Faces Down, consistently generate in his songs. Lerche’s talent is so natural that it almost seems effortless, with many of the tracks on the album recorded in only one take (you’d never be able to guess that by how spotless each song sounds).

Phantom Punch is a giant step in the right direction for Lerche and his band, who work spectacularly together in producing a well-rounded album that gives off a pleasant, lively vibe.
