Senses Fail, “Still Searching” (2/5)
After almost three years, Senses Fail is back in action with their new full-length album, “Still Searching”. This album, released by the New Jersey natives, isn’t anything overly ambitious for Senses Fail - the music still has a little screamo edge, and lyrically it is very similar to previous releases. Buddy Nielson’s tales of depression, self-medication, and self-loathing are still there, and while this subject matter is entertaining for a while, it gets old very fast.
The CD does have a few stand out tracks however, such as the first single off the album, “Calling All Cars”. This song is what I would call a “textbook Senses Fail” song. It contains everything that Senses Fail does best: extremely catchy songs with dark lyrics that will be stuck in your head for days. Nielson sings, “So will you scatter my ashes where they won't be found / I kept my word when I swore that I would let you down / And now that I'm gone / Try to forget me and just move on.” This is one of the many lyrical hooks we have come to expect from this band. Other stand out songs include the infectiously catchy “Everyday Is A Struggle.” In one of the catchiest choruses ever written by Nielson, he sings, “So much for the past year / I poured it down the drain with all the alcohol and pain I got from / Your eyes, oh your eyes / I’m burning out my bedside / And I’m rotting out my insides slowly.”
With the exception of “Calling All Cars” and “Everyday Is A Struggle”, “Still Searching” is a huge let down. This CD will keep you amused for a few listens, but you will probably lose all interest in it quickly after that.
