Picture Atlantic, “Change Is Welcome” EP (4/5)

Some of you may be wondering who the band Picture Atlantic is. If you’ve never heard of them, it’s understandable. With less than 4,000 friends on their myspace, these Bay Area natives are not very well known yet – but they will be. In their EP, “Change Is Welcome”, Picture Atlantic shows off their fresh sound through soft, indie rock tunes alongside melodic, foot tapping beats.

Picture Atlantic’s debut EP is a delight to listen to from start to finish. Though all of the songs on this album are enjoyable, one of the highlights on this record (as well as one of my personal favorites) is the track “Nablus”. Its clear piano emphasis throughout the majority of the song is both captivating as well as refreshing. Sound, however, is not the only redeeming quality of the band. One of the best things about Picture Atlantic is their lyrics. The lyrics used in the band’s songs are not only packed with imagery, but they are also easily relatable to the average listener. A good example of this would be from the song “Every Ocean’s Tide”, with the lyrics, “Lend me your eyes / Let me get lost inside / Every ocean’s tide / And ray of sunshine / We have just begun”, which talk about the beginning’s of a new relationship.

“Change Is Welcome” is an enjoyable shift from the typical, cookie-cutter music you tend to hear on the radio. Though this EP may not be the easiest to get a hold of (unless you buy it at a show, you’ll most likely have to purchase it online), it is well worth your time to find a copy.
