Jesse Ponnock, "JP" (4/5)
In 2007, Jesse Ponnock won MTVu's esteemed Best Music On Campus contest. Two years later and still with nothing to show for it, he's decided to take matters into his own hands - and by that, I mean he's releasing an EP on his own time and terms (aka: now and for free).
For an EP of just 5 songs, Jesse does a great job of showing off not only his abilities as a lyricist, but his strong vocals, which shine through melodic pop tracks. In short, this guy knows how to make music, and he knows how to do it well. Though all the songs on the EP are worth listening to, without a doubt the one to give the most attention to would be "Guns Down", who's piano parts and up tempo rhythm makes one consider the song to be along the lines of a modernized 80s tune, and is certain to find a place in the hearts of multiple age demographics.
That being said, the boy's not perfect. Certainly his upbeat tracks are great, but in his slower, more ballad-like parts (such as the beginning of "Spotlight" and the majority of "Coat") he doesn't evoke quite as much emotion through his voice and therefore it feels like the track is missing something.
But, can I really complain? These piano heavy tunes have got me tapping my toes and bopping my head, and for a summery fun EP, I really can't ask for anything more than that.
