I The Mighty, "We Speak" (3.5/5)
Having been released from their recording contract just short of their debut album's release, one would think I The Mighty would be set back right now. The truth is, the opposite has happened. This quartet of young gents has dedicated themselves to getting their music out to their fans as soon as possible, and if I can be frank, it's seriously good material.
When you're reading a book and you're not hooked from the beginning, it's often hard to continue on. The same goes with listening to music. So often I listen to artists who have opening tracks that are just missing that "wow" factor I need to continue happily. I The Mighty (thankfully) didn't have this problem. We Speak opens with "Modern Medicine", a track with expressive vocals that lured me in immediately. After that, the album continues with "Technicolor", an obvious display of the band's talented instrumentation. These songs alone provided the hook necessary to make me want to see what else the band had up their sleeve.
Plain & simple, it did not disappoint. "Carousel" brought it down a notch and showed the softer side of the band, while "Hiding From The Sun" was heavy with beats. "Comet" was the equivalent of the Christmas present that had all of your favorite things in it - gang vocals, melody, harder parts, poppy parts, etc. That being said, there were a couple rough patches in the mix. The weakest song on the album was "Killer", which had a couple vocally rough patches and seemed the most uncomposed in comparison to the rest of the album. In addition to that, the verses of "Nightlife" droned on a little too much for my taste.
Regardless, I The Mighty has managed to produce a strong, solid rock album that's going in the exact direction I wish the scene would have taken a few years ago. This little void in my life that I never knew needed to be filled, has now been made complete by We Speak. If this album manages to go by unnoticed, I will be very surprised.
Favorite Track: Comet
