Dustin Kensrue, "Please Come Home" (4.5/5)

Dustin Kensrue, front man of post-hardcore giants Thrice, has released his first solo CD via Equal Vision Records, titled “Please Come Home”.

With this CD, Kensrue takes his music in a completely different direction from Thrice, trading in his electric guitar for an acoustic one and throwing in bits of harmonica on many of the songs. These folk-tinged songs are some of the best to ever come from Kensrue. Some standouts on the CD include “I Knew You Before” and “Pistol”.

The songs have a fast tempo and Kensrue sings with all that he has. In “I Knew You Before” he sings the chorus powerfully, saying, “The magazines and media supply you with your plastic protocol / And maybe music television really is the devil after all / But all I can I say is I knew you before you were beautiful / Before you grew up, before you gave in”. While other songs show a darker side, in “Blood And Wine” Kensrue sings, “Sometimes the white coats, they hide black hearts / We've learned to sugar coat the same black guards / Well, I turn lead into gold / I'll cure original sin / Oh, now that I've tasted blood, now this wine seems too thin”.

This CD is a very strong release for Kensure, which demonstrates his musical range excellently. It’s not often you come across someone who can go from front man of a post-hardcore band to writing folk rock songs. This CD isn’t only for fans of Thrice, but for anyone who enjoys good music.
