Blue Sky Reality, “Cabin Sessions EP" (4/5)

I’ve been called out for being a music elitist on numerous occasions, and frankly, that’s okay with me. I’ve been told the music I listen to is often over-complicated and inaccessible, but, whether I admit it or not, I do enjoy simplistic poppy music sometimes. Let me tell you, nobody is doing it better than Blue Sky Reality right now.

Blue Sky Reality’s major label debut, “Cabin Sessions,” brings me back to junior high, sitting in my room intently listening to the Goo Goo Dolls and wondering, “how the hell do they make something so simple so beautiful?” I’ve been waiting for a group of my peers (they range in age from 19-21) to bring back the late 90’s rock we all jammed out to on our radios for awhile now.

BSR creates acoustic based songs that generally seem to start shining about halfway though. “Honestly Wrong” begins with only acoustic guitar and Zak Stucchi’s soulful vocals as he sings /Even bad can win sometimes, even the good can lose it all/ but slowly progresses into a full-band effort. “Believe” starts strong and surprises with a delay driven guitar line on the chorus reminiscent of a track off U2’s Joshua Tree album.

It is obvious that BSR is on the rise. These five young men have the future in their hands and I can’t wait to see how they mature in preparation for their upcoming full-length. My only complaint about “Cabin Sessions” is that most of the songs start out exactly the same, with acoustic guitar and singing. I’d like to see a little more variance on their next album with song structure. Other than that, BSR delivers a catchy album with contagious vocal melodies that will follow you around for days. The future is bright for these guys.
