Brand New, “The Devil & God Are Raging Inside Me” (5/5)

After disappearing from the music scene for almost four years, Brand New has released their third full-length album, titled “The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me”. With every release being vastly different from the last, Brand New shows again that they will never make the same CD twice.

The CD begins with the first single from the album, “Sowing Season (Yeah)”. The song starts out pretty slowly, with Jesse Lacey singing in a very low key. It doesn’t take long before the song picks up, as Lacey almost yells the lyrics, “I am not your friend, I am just a man who knows how to feel. I am not your friend, I am not your lover, I am not your family”. The fourth song, “Degausser”, is one of the best tracks on the entire record. It clearly shows the turn that the band has taken to writing extremely dark songs. In this song Lacey sings, “Take me back to your bed / I love you so much that it hurts my head / Say I don't mind you under my skin / I'll let the bad parts in, the bad parts in / When we were made we were set apart / Life is a test and I got bad marks / Now some saint got the job of writing down my sins / The storm is coming.”

The second to last song, “Archers”, is the only song on the CD that sounds like it could’ve been on Deja Entendu. The song features a huge soaring chorus, the only one of its kind on the record. Lacey sings, “What did learn tonight? / You’re shouting so loud you barely enjoy this broken thing / You’re voice that never sings, its what I say / You were freezing over hell / You were bringing on the end you do so well / You can only blame yourself its what I say.”

With “The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me”, Brand New has created their masterpiece. This album shows everything that the band went through leading up to the anticipated release of this record, and though this CD is completely dark, with virtually nothing happy in it, it is definitely something you should purchase right now. This record will become a lasting classic that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
