Broadway Calls, “Broadway Calls” (5/5)

Portland, Oregon’s Broadway Calls have just recently released their self-titled debut on State Of Mind Recordings. This album covers a wide range of topics, from relationship problems to environmental issues to friendships. In the incredibly catchy “Suffer The Kids,” which is a statement on the condition of our society, singer Ty Vaughn sings, “This place has suffered at our hands / We’ve got narrow minds and fat waist bands / We’ve got a war on terror, a war on drugs, a war on women and a war on love.”

The record then moves on to the slower pop-punk song “Classless Reunion,” which recounts the story of a failed relationship. A prime example of this is when Vaughn sings, “My eyes remember you but I think my heart might take some getting used to / speak up, my ears still ring from those nights we spent alone in my bedroom / I had a dream last night that I gave you everything you ever wanted.”

The strongest song on the CD is “Save Our Ship,” which can best be described as a friendship anthem. This track starts out acoustic until midway when the whole band comes in singing, “Lets pray for the sun / lets pray for the eye of the storm / to warm us back up, catch our breath and prepare for the next fucking challenge we know is soon near.”

Overall this album is full of energy from start to finish. The band just finished their first full U.S. tour in support of the CD, and will be heading back down the west coast in January with Baltimore’s Ruiner.
