Amy Kuney, “Bird’s Eye View” (5/5)

The debut album from songstress Amy Kuney, Bird’s Eye View is a truly whimsical journey from start to finish. Kuney stands above other contemporary female artists by proving herself as an incredibly clever lyricist with a knack for weaving simple, fresh melodies behind her rich voice. Each track uses a variety of different instruments, creating an impressive sound that is clean rather than overcrowded.

The album opens with the beautiful “Simple Things, but Bird’s Eye View really takes off with the second track, “Rocket Surgery.” Mixing a solid beat with keys and a sporadic horn section, Kuney’s voice seems to carry you along with the building melody until the song reaches full momentum at the chorus. “Thank You For Last Night” stands out with a slower rhythm and playful lyrics, but lyrical wit shines the brightest on “Love Is Trippy,” an infectiously catchy song about love’s often fleeting nature. Kuney showcases her softer side with the beautiful track “Appreciate Your Hands,” crooning, “You have so much love to give / And I am here to welcome it as long as you’ve got time to spend / And I’ll be the kind of work that appreciates your hands.”

The album is somewhat reminiscent of Regina Spektor’s lively style, but truthfully, it is difficult to find an artist to compare Kuney’s unique ability with. Anyone who listens to Bird’s Eye View will likely fall under Kuney’s spell, proving herself as an explosive talent to watch in the future.
