The Color Turning - David DelFonzo

C
= Cath, D = David

C: For the record, state your name and what you do in the band.
D:
My name is David and at the moment, I’m playing guitar and rhodes piano...and I’m the quiet one, unless I’m talking to my friend Cathy Vagner from Germany.
C: What if you are talking to Cathy W. from sunny California?
D: Then I’m a happy camper.

C: How long has The Color Turning been together for?
D:
About 2 and a half years. I've been in the band for about a year. But, I should say that I was in the band for about 3 months at the beginning, and I left to start another band called Astoria. But now I’m back.
C: You just couldn’t stay away.

C: What is your favorite song to play live?
D:
Right now it's probably a song called "Swallowing Swords". It’s just too much fun to play. We get to use electronics and weird sounds on it and at the end, it’s a mini dance party. Someone usually ends up clapping along, and when it gets going, it’s hard to stop playing. Very clappable.

C: Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
D:
Ever heard of a chegg?
C: Uhm, no, I haven’t.
D: That came first, and a few cheggs got into a land dispute and started their own gangs, the chickens and the eggs. After that, all hell broke loose.
C: Oh man, I can just imagine. You have truly enlightened me.
D: Anytime.

C: Who is your favorite late night talk show host?
D:
Easily Conan O’Brian. It’s been one of my life goals to play his show since I started playing music. That being said, it bums me out when people diss on Jay Leno. He is what he is, and what he is, isn't that bad. I don’t think I’ve ever used that many "is"s in a sentence before.
C: An impressive amount of "is"s, I can assure you.

C: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 things would you bring with you? Note: No transportation devices (a.k.a. ways to get off the island) allowed.
D:
Ok. My Ipod, a grand piano, and all my friends. Could you imagine banging away at a grand piano as loud as you could on an island? That'd be good enough. I mean, before I eventually starved to death, that is.

C: Who are some of your musical influences?
D:
Ok, this question gets tricky, because we, The Color Turning, don't all agree on what good music is, but for me, David, I'd say: Coldplay, Bjork, Radiohead, Wilco, Superdrag, That Dog, and Sigur Ros.

C: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
D:
I think I'd like to fly...I don’t care much for traffic, and I could do some good with that power. I don’t think I could handle having anything greater. There'd be too much pressure on someone with the ability to stop time or mentally control things you know?
C: Yea, makes sense.

D: I hope you don't mind, but I’m kinda changing my clothes as we speak, we're playing a show tonight. So um, don’t peek, ok?
C:
Ok, I'll shield my eyes.
D: Thanks.

C: What is your most embarrassing experience?
D:
Band wise or life wise?
C: Uhm, whichever is more embarrassing.
D: Shoot. I’m embarrassed so often that I’m sort of used to it now. But a standout moment has to be when my telephone accidentally called my ex girlfriend's family while I was listening to some random medical talk show on the radio. All they heard was about 15 minutes of penis and vagina stories. A bad day for David. By the way, I love listening to NPR.
C: NPR?
D: National Public Radio.
C: Ahh, got it.
D: It’s like good news, not crappy stuff.

C: What’s your favorite thing to do, outside of the band?
D:
Take pictures with my old film camera. It's really hard to get good pictures, so it makes me pay a lot of attention to what I'm looking at. I like things that take my mind and focus it completely.

C: That's awesome. What's your favorite movie of all time?
D:
Harold and Maude. Hands down best ever.

C: Is there anything else you want to say before we end this?
D:
Yeah, you're interview was much better than mine. [He gave me a fake interview before I interviewed him.]
C: -laughs- Thank you! And, thank you for letting me interview you.
D: Thank you.
