Motion City Soundtrack – Josh Cain
C = Cath, J = Josh
C: For the record, state your name and what you do in the band.
J: My name is Josh and I play guitar & sing backups.
C: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
J: I’d say its kinda poppy indie-rock from the 90s but no. I guess… I don’t know how to put it. Rock pop, I guess.
C: In your eyes, how does your new CD, “Commit This To Memory”, differ from “I Am The Movie”?
J: I think the biggest change is that it’s actually a developed record, where the first record was more like a collection of songs that we’d recorded. Like, songs that we’d written over 4 years of time & then put together on a record. You know what I mean? We didn’t know we were going to record a CD when we did that one, & this new record we knew we were going to record. So, it’s a little different.
C: What’s the best thing (in your opinion) about being in a band?
J: It’s not having to wait tables.
C: Is that what you did before?
J: Yea, I was waiting tables. I did graphic design for a while but I just needed a more flexible job. There’s this punk rock pizza place in Minneapolis called “Pizza Luce” & I’d wait tables at night there, make enough money to get by, and be able to do this at the same time.
C: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
J: I have to say, “The City of Lost Children” is my favorite movie of all time. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen it, it’s amazing though. It’s by a French director, I don’t remember his name right now, but he did this movie called “Delicatessen”, and he did Amelie as well.
C: If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
J: I answered this question recently & it’s just… it’s a morbid answer and I don’t know why. But it’s to have the power to disappear forever.
C: Why??
J: I don’t know, because it sounds ridiculous. *laughs*
C: If you were stuck on a deserted island with no food & no one but your band members, who would you eat first & why?
J: Hmm… Probably Jesse because he’s uh… Well I don’t know, I don’t know… I think we’d all be scared of Justin eating us because he loves to eat and if he wasn’t able to eat he would probably freak out and try to eat us all. So I’d probably be running for my life at that point.
C: Well you could just eat him first and then you wouldn’t have to worry about him coming after you.
J: True true, we could eat him for lunch. Yea… And hopefully this will never happen so...
C: Can you describe each member of the band in 3 words each?
J: Hm, Each member?
C: Yea.
J: Uhh, I think… Wow, this is hard. I think Matt would be the cute, quiet, shy. I would be the obnoxious, overbearing, idiot. I think Justin would be the egotistical, self-deprecating, *tape screws up here and I miss the last word*. So someone that’s like, thinks they’re -- is super egotistical but also super self-deprecating. So I don’t know, it kind of cancels each other out. And then Jesse I’d say vain, obnoxious, and fun. And Tony I would say is quiet, amazing, and uh, id say a little shy as well.
C: One of the Hanson brothers walks up to you & says he wants to join your band. What do you do?
J: Uh, well, I think we have too many members currently. I don’t know, I don’t know. Maybe kick out a guy? I don’t know.
C: You would let him?
J: Yea, you gotta have a Hanson in the band!
C: Do you have any embarrassing band stories you could share?
J: Embarrassing?
C: Or just interesting. Whatever.
J: Well, hmm, the other day we went water sliding with uh, Fall Out Boy and From First To Last, and us. And that was fun. We’d go down the tubes - they let us kinda have our own way at the water park - so we had the tubes & we connected them all up and we went down like 15 people together and caused a big massacre. People like, cut their arms, and it was ridiculous. But, it was a lot of fun though. I don’t know, that’s not very embarrassing but…
C: It was interesting though!
C: Is there anything else you would like to share with the Internet world?
J: Uhm, you know, if you stole our record, buy it if you can. Off the inter-ma-net.
