Charlotte Sometimes – Charlotte, Coley O'Toole

Cathy: For the record, can you state your name and what you do in the band?
Charlotte:
Hi, I’m Charlotte from Charlotte Sometimes, and I’m the singer/songwriter of the band.
Coley: I’m Coley, and I play keyboard for the wonderful Charlotte Sometimes.

Cathy: Your debut album, Waves and the Both of Us, was just released in May. How have things changed for you personally and as a band since the release of the album?
Charlotte:
Oh my goodness, they’ve changed a great deal. Right Coley?
Coley: Yea, we really learned how to be a family and how to deal with every given situation, whether it be a male or a female problem.
Charlotte: If I’m breaking down, they’re pretty good about it now. Also, we’re getting a lot of attention now. It’s definitely a different experience for me to have people blog about me, good and bad. Luckily I have really good guys in the band that are really supportive of me.

Cathy: How have fans responded to the record?
Charlotte:
Really well. Right now we’re doing really well with the charts, and we got on the VH1 countdown, which I was super excited about. We’re getting great fan response. All our fans are misfits, they’re just a bunch of different people.
Coley: Yea, they’re out there somewhere because the video is doing really good…
Charlotte: I don’t know where they are, but they’re somewhere! –laughs-
Coley: I’m waiting for them to crawl out of the woodwork, but everything’s doing really well.

Cathy: Do you have a favorite song off of the CD?
Charlotte:
My favorite song is “Losing Sleep” because I can really identify with it to this day, being in this industry and all the pressure I put on myself.
Coley: I’d say definitely “Losing Sleep” to play live, it’s just an amazing song. But I’m in love with the song “Pilot”, it’s definitely my #1. It’s my favorite.

Cathy: You’re currently signed to Geffen Records. What made you decide to sign with them, and were you at all hesitant to sign to a major label?
Charlotte:
I was not hesitant to sign to a major label because I wanted the money. – laughs – They are actually one of my favorite labels, they have a lot of artists on their roster that I really respect. The other labels that had come to me were in it for the wrong reasons or coming to me because I had good management, instead of liking the songs. Geffen had a really great plan for me - when I got there they were prepared and they knew what they wanted, and that’s what I wanted to hear.

Cathy: You’re the only girl in your band. Are there any difficulties that arise in being constantly surrounded by guys while on tour?
Charlotte:
Yes! I’m right now sharing a bus with 11 guys and believe me, I cry myself to sleep nightly. Coley, how do you feel about me being the only girl?
Coley: I give her so much credit, that’s why we try to do our best to make sure she’s getting taken care of. We’ve all got to play big brother. She’s up against the wolves on this one, but she’s doing a really good job.

Cathy: The drummer of your band, Spencer Peterson, used to drum for Hidden In Plain View. How did you guys meet, and how did he wind up becoming your drummer?
Charlotte:
It was kind of word of mouth. Once the CD was finished, I was putting my band together and my management sent out an email. Spencer didn’t have a band at the time because Hidden In Plain View had broken up. I met Spencer at a Whole Foods in Union Square in New York City and I didn’t know what he looked like and I had no idea about anything about Hidden In Plain View. I ran into him and I was like, “Who is this skinny kid?” and he goes, “Hi, I’m Spencer” and I was like, “… Oh hey!” –laughs- We had a good talk. We’re very similar people. If I were to be a man, I would probably be Spencer. Definitely. We love each other, and it worked out.

Cathy: What is one thing not many people know about you?
Charlotte:
My real name.
Coley: That’s a good one!

Cathy: What’s your favorite thing about being a musician? Least favorite?
Charlotte:
My favorite thing is being able to emote through music and to help people through their daily lives with my music. My least favorite part is touring in a bus with 11 guys. –laughs-
Coley: Definitely my favorite part is being able to emotionally put a song out there through music but touring is my heart and soul and I’ll do it until the end of time. We just have to keep giving her pep, keeping her going.
Charlotte: -starts fake crying-
Coley: But it’s amazing to play for people every day and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Cathy: If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring 3 things with you, what would they be and why?
Charlotte:
Chapstick, sunscreen, a toothbrush.
Coley: I’d bring a pencil, a notebook, and a guitar.
Charlotte: Ah! Well, that’s okay, because if we’re both on the island it all works out.
Coley: …and Jessica Biel.
Charlotte: Aw! You can’t bring Jessica Biel! It ain’t gonna happen.

Cathy: Closing Statements?
Charlotte:
